Chapter 9

When George returned to the house, he ignored Cashew’s attempts for attention, and headed straight for the computer. He wanted to figure out who was driving that blue van. He thought maybe if he was able to get hooked into some local traffic cameras he would be able to catch the plate of the van. However, before he could sit down there was a sharp knock on the front door. He cut his gaze in the direction of the door and hesitated. Everyone Kerri knew would know that she was at the shop at this time of day. He personally didn’t know anyone well enough for them to be paying him a visit. So who could possibly be at the door?

He walked over to the door and opened it, ready to defend if necessary.

“George.” Detective Carver crossed her arms as she stared hard into his eyes. “Let’s see, you hang up on me now.”

“That was a misunderstanding, Detective.” He smiled as he stepped out through the door. “Is there something I can help you with?”

“Perhaps you’d like to tell me where you were at the time of the fire, and the time of Wade’s death?” She glanced past him, into the house. “Or maybe you’d like to invite me in for a drink of water?”

“You don’t look thirsty.” He crossed his arms. “And those questions make me sound like a suspect.”

“I’m not sure what you are.” She raked her gaze over him. “One minute you’re too involved in this case, and the next you refuse to answer my calls. So, what’s going on here? Who are you?”

“I’m a grandfather.” He smiled. “Looking out for his granddaughter. That’s all.”

“I suspect you’re much more than that, George. Now, if I go by policy I should be warning you to stay out of my investigation, and to tell your granddaughter to do the same. But I rarely go by policy. I go by instinct.”

“I’ve been known to trust my gut.” He continued to study her, unsure of where the conversation was going.

“Well, my instincts tell me that you might have information that could help me solve this case. They also tell me that you are well-practiced at lying.” She met his eyes. “Am I wrong?”

“If you trust your gut, there’s no need to ask me, right?” He flashed her a grin.

“Enough.” She shook her head. “Maybe you don’t take me seriously because I’m a female detective, but I’ve worn a badge for over thirty years. You can try to con me as much as you want, but it’s not going to work. I can either take you down to the station and question you there or you can be more straightforward with me right now.”

He narrowed his eyes. He knew full well that with one phone call he could have her off his back. His history as an agent meant that he still had access to resources that would protect his identity. But a few things could go wrong, not the least of which was the possibility of having to move away from Kerri in order to protect his past.
